The island of Saint John is just twenty square miles and has a population of four thousand. Regular ferry boats from nearby Charlotte Amalie on St Thomas run approximately once an hour. The island is an a popular day trip excursion for cruise ship passengers visiting the United States Virgin Islands. Passengers arrive at the dock in Cruz Bay to be met by colourful open sided buses. There are also regular daily ferries from Tortola in the British Virgin Islands, Virgin Gorda and Jost Van Dyke.

Laurance Rockefeller once owned a major part of the island. In 1956 he donated all his land to the US National Park Service. Three quarters of the island forms part of the Virgin Islands National Park.
