Welcome to St John on the Paradise
Islands website. St John
is the smallest of the
main three United States
Virgin Islands and lies
just 4 miles east of
St
Thomas (the main
USVI island). St John covers
an area of around 20
square miles and with a
population of 4,000. |
|
St John
is serviced by a regular
ferry boat from
Charlotte
Amalie which runs
approximately every
hour. The island is an
especially popular day
excursion for cruise
ship passengers. Visitors
arrive at the dock
in the lovely Cruz Bay,
where they will be met
by transport which is
often colourfully
painted open sided
buses. There are also
daily boats from
Tortola in the BVI,
Virgin Gorda, Anegada
and Jost Van Dyke. |
|
The major
part of St John is under
developed and a National
Park. The island has a
few notable landmarks
including the world
famous Trunk Bay
(below). Laurance
Rockefeller owned a
large part of the island
and in 1956 he donated his
land to the United
States National Park
Service. In fact more
than three quarters of
the total land area is
part of the Virgin
Islands National Park
and protected from
development. |
|
Trunk Bay
has consistently
appeared in the list of
top ten beaches in the
World and is a good
enough reason to visit
St John. Other bays or
beaches worth exploring
on St John are Caneel Bay (the
former home of
Rockefeller), Maho Bay
and Cinnamon Bay. |
