Charlotte
Amalie is a busy working
port and one of the most
popular
cruise
port destinations in the
Caribbean; the town was
named after a Danish
Queen and has the best
shopping opportunities
in the Virgin Islands on
the busy main street
which full of quaint
little stores, together
with a colourful harbour
front lined with old
Danish buildings (see
image below). |
|
The
island was first sighted
by Christopher Columbus
in 1493 on his second
voyage and Dutch West
India Company
established a trading
post in 1657. Sugar cane
production was the main
industry until slavery
was abolished in 1848.
St Thomas,
St John and
St Croix were purchased
by the American
Government for $25
million in 1917. Today tourism is the
main source of income
and St Thomas is
especially popular with
American visitors. |
