Charlotte Amalie is the
capital of the largest
US Virgin Island of
St
Thomas. The town is
he main port and duty
free shopping centre
with a population of
around 20,000. The town
is
named after a Danish
Queen of Hesse-Kassel
(1650 to 1714) who was
the consort to King
Christian V of Denmark. |

Charlotte
Amalie is one of the
most popular
ports of call for almost
all of the
cruise ships operating
in the Caribbean; as well
a visitors arriving by
air at the Cyril E King
Airport. The airport
acts as a hub for all of
the Islands,
including the
BVI, with
connecting flights to
various US cities and around the
world. |

Charlotte
Amalie is a very busy working
cruise port;
sometimes having as many
as three massive cruise
ships docked at any one
time. Around 1,500,000
cruise passengers visit
St Thomas every year;
most arriving from
nearby
San Juan in
Puerto Rico or from
Miami.
The
old town has the best
duty free shopping opportunities
in the Virgin Islands on
the busy main street
which full of quaint
stores, together
with the colourful harbour
front area which is lined with old
Danish buildings. |

Charlotte
Amalie St Thomas sights of
interest:
Downtown shopping. Main
Street, the harbour
front and quaint narrow
alleys full of
boutiques; best explored
on foot. The town can
get busy when many
cruise ships are in
dock.
Fort Christian. A Danish
fort built in 1666; now
a museum. It's claim to
fame is now the oldest
standing structure in
the Virgin Islands.
Lutheran Church. Built
by the Danes in 1793.
99 Steps: Actually 103
steps in total. Built in
the mid 1700's using
bricks brought in the
hulls of Danish ships
which were used as
ballast.
