The Nelson's Dockyard Museum is housed on the
ground floor of the original Naval Officer's House
(Admiral's House). The building is Victorian dating back to
1855. On display are a number of items belonging to Nelson,
including his famous telescope. Upstairs is dedicated to the
military history of
English Harbour.
Horatio Nelson arrived in the
Caribbean Leeward Islands
in 1784 as Captain of in HMS Boreas and as head of the
squadron of ships. His task was to enforce shipping laws
(The "Navigation Act" which prevented the trade of goods
using foreign or American ships): and to develop the naval
facilities in English Harbour. It is understood that Nelson
was not popular with the Antiguans, he hated the island and
spend most of three years in Antigua aboard his ship. |
