Welcome to Caneel Bay
on the island of
St John in the US
Virgin Islands. The
resort is within the
Virgin Islands National
Park and was once owned
by Laurance Rockefeller. |
Rockefeller came across
Caneel
Bay in 1952 whilst sailing in the
Caribbean. The population of the island in 1952 was only
400 and most of Saint John
was jungle. He imagined
the perfect vacation
spot here and purchased
what was the the Caneel
Bay
Plantation.
In 1955, Rockefeller
began to develop the
infrastructure on the
island to provide the
resort with electric
power, drinking water
and paved roads from
Cruz Bay. Later he
donated the land to the
US federal government,
paving the way for the
creation of the
United States Virgin Island
National
Park. |
